Many times egg roll and spring roll are used interchangeably, but in reality, they are two distinct food items. There are multiple variations of both but there are several things that set them apart from hear other. The cooking technique on an egg roll and a spring roll vary depending on culture.

An egg roll is usually made of meat, such as chicken or pork, and vegetables, such as cabbage and carrots. The wrapper of the egg roll is flour dough, dipped in egg and then fried. For a healthier version, egg rolls can be baked instead of fried. Egg rolls are usually larger and more substantial than spring rolls. Egg rolls are usually served with a dipping sauce, usually a sweet and sour sauce.

A spring roll is also commonly known as a garden roll. A spring roll is filled with a variety of vegetables, usually no meat. Sometimes meat, such as shrimp or pork, will be added to a spring roll. The wrapper is rice-based and fried for a crisp outer shell. Spring rolls can be served cold or chilled. You can bake spring rolls instead of frying them for a healthier version. Spring rolls are served with some form of dipping sauces.

 

Appetiser vs. Meal

Spring rolls are generally eaten as appetisers, although occasionally Americans will have them with the main meal when meat has been added. Egg rolls are meant to be a part of the main meal since they contain meat and vegetables.
