Duvet Vs. Comforter – What Are The Differences?
Duvet and a comforter are different. Most people believe that a duvet is the same exact thing as a comforter, just a fancier name. A duvet will go over a comforter or replace your comforter.
What is a Duvet?
A duvet is typically white with no decorative design printed in it. Duvets are thicker and contain more filling, making them fluffy. They were made to either replace a comforter or to be an extra thick cover on the top of a regular comforter.
Duvets are not generally decorative, they are more functional. You can purchase a removable and washable duvet cover to add a decorative touch and make them easier to clean.
What is a Comforter?
A comforter is a thick blanket that is filled to be warmer and softer than a regular blanket. Comforters will have a decorative design printed directly on them and usually come with matching pillow covers for an added decorative touch.
A matching bed skirt may also be included in a comforter set that coordinates the entire ensemble for your bed. Some may have matching window treatments and decorative pillows. Comforters are meant to be placed directly over bed linens.
Size
A duvet is the same size as the actual bed, no material drapes over the sides. A comforter is larger than the actual bed so it drapes down the sides. Know the difference between California king bed vs regular king bed.
Filling
A duvet can be filled with down, feathers, natural or synthetic materials. A comforter is usually filled with down or polyester.
Care Instructions
A duvet should not be washed. The filling of a duvet is not washable. You will want to purchase a duvet cover that way you can keep dirt off the actual duvet and the cover can be washed or replaced easily.
A comforter is washable, but regular washing can cause decorative designs to fade or fabric pilling to occur.
